Here's my thing

 ALCS tonite

Finally, tonight's the night as my Sox begin the league championship series against the Indians. What a fun series! Good pitching, big bats, and no freekin' Jankees! Honestly, I am so over that team and their domination of the media world -- "How the Jankees saved us after 9/11 . . . How the Jankees saved New York after the blackout . . . How . . ." oh, whatever!

We've got Beckett vs. Sabathia on the mound tonite and Big Schill against Carmona Saturday -- great pitching matchups. Intriguing move by the Sox to flip/flop Schill and Dice-K to let Matsuzaka pitch in Cleveland, where he had his best game this year. And what about Wake? Up for game 4? I know some guys (that's you Big Chris) aren't fans of Wakefield, but I've always had a soft spot for knuckleballers and this guy has given his all to the Sox for years. I'd love to see him win the series. All in all, great stuff!

My girl Morgan Pressel got her swerve on at the Samsung World Championship shooting a dandy 68 putting her in a tie for second, one shot back. Way to rebound after that crappy Sunday, girl! Troubled so-called phenom Michelle Wie fired a 79 putting her 12 shots back already. If she approaches the Mendoza Line again I wonder if we'll get another suspect injury to save her tour eligibility.

 Maybe I think too much

Okay, stop laughing out there . . .

Seriously, check this out . . .

We have a state lottery in Florida. And they are currently running this promotion for their Fantasy Five program. Apparently, you buy a Fantasy Five ticket and for a dollar more you get some sort of matching numbers that can win you some money instantly.

So the theme is matching okay? Keep up . . .

At the end of the radio commercial, the female announcer, who sounds like those that do jewelry store ads -- you know, all happy and such -- says this:

"Like Romeo & Juliet, Samson & Delilah, you can find your perfect match . . ." yadda, yadda, yadda, at the Florida Lottery.

Uh, hello . . . read many books? Romeo and Juliet committed suicide, you know, they killed themselves! Delilah seduced Samson, stripped him of his strength and slaved him out to the Philistines. Who gouged out his eyes and chained him to a millstone until he finally brought down a temple upon himself and his captors killing himself and all the Philistines.

Call me crazy, but those aren't the best examples for a perfect match, you know?

Remember when the liberal arts types in college were better than the rest of us? Cooler, hipper? They sprinkled their conversations with all those obtuse and abstract references that made us mere mortal students feel all stupid and stuff? I guess esoteric references now stop in the 70's or something.

Couldn't they have picked Mickey and Minney Mouse? Rob and Laura? Joannie and Ciachi(sp?) for cryin' out loud?!  groan

Like I said -- maybe I'm just thinking too much, it's just a stupid radio commercial.

Still . . .

 Sort of a "half-Carnac" weekend

My Sox beat the Angels yesterday afternoon 9-1 as Big Schill came up big (as predicted here) with 7 shutout innings. The boys really broke it open with a 7 run 8th inning that crushed the life out of Anaheim. Only blemish was watching Eric Gagne close out the ninth. What happened to this guy? I remember when he was lights out back with the Dodgers. I know he got hurt, but did he forget how to throw a baseball? geez

And of course the Indians failed to put a dagger in the Janks when they had them down. Again, as correctly predicted here (yeah, I'm showing off), Clemens couldn't get out of the third with hamstring problems. I feel bad for Rocket, you could see him gutting it out on the mound, not how we want to see him end his career. I would have been happier with him throwing a great game and Rivera losing it in the ninth. Oh well. The Janks are going with ace Wang (tonite?) and the Indians are saving Sabathia for a possible game five. Just gotta drag this out, groan. I'm dreading the possibility of yet another Red Sox / Jankee series this year. ugh

And now why I'm not a professional prognostigator -- my Bucs got hammered by the Colts. Pittman's hurt, the O-line forgot how to block, eesh, what a crappy game. Fun part will be watching Chucky try to find another running back.

Morgan, Morgan, Morgan . . . what's up girl?! My girl shot an 80 in the final round yesterday to finish 21 shots behind! Ouch! Naturally, I couldn't find the tournament on TV, so there's no telling why she played so badly. Wait 'til next week I suppose.

Sucked about Dale Jr. yesterday. Watching Gordon and JJ finish one/two yesterday while his engine melted into a pile of goo, again -- think he's counting the days until he's with Hendrick Motors? yeah, me too

 Safe, for the moment

According to reports, Ayaan Hirsi Ali is back in the US and is under the protection of a private security firm. She may be back working at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank, where she was prior to recently fleeing back to Holland.

There has been some conflicting information about the recent cessation of her protection in this country by the Dutch gov't. It had been first reported that the Dutch had simply refused to continue funding her security while she was living in the US, prompting her to flee back to Holland for protection.

Newer reports say that the US asked the Dutch to cease the activities of their [Dutch] police personel working on our soil. In either case, for the time being, Ms. Hirsi Ali is in hiding, safe and alive.

The Dutch Parliment is slated to debate her status and the consequences of their decision. She is, at the moment, still a Dutch citizen and her life is threatened by other Dutch citizens -- Muslims, who make up only 5% of the population in Holland. It is astonishing that a country like Holland, that boasts about it's various freedoms, including that of free speech, is so reticent to protect someone like Ms. Hirsi Ali.

Especially as she is not an anarchist, but a woman who is speaking out against the brutal treatment of other women under Sharia Law. Something she knows all too well from personal experience. Those experiences led her to colaborate with artist Theo van Gogh to make a ten minute TV movie, Submission, that depicted a Muslim woman in an abusive relationship with her husband.

The film had graphic scenes of her abuse along with images of partially naked women, their backs covered with whip flay marks, and over the red scars were printed the words of the Qur'an that justified the abuse.

So incensed were Dutch Muslims that Theo van Gogh was murdered in the street, in front of witnesses, shot twice as he begged for mercy. The killer then slit his throat and stabbed him multiple times. A note, pinned to van Gogh's lifeless body was addressed to Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

Written in Dutch, the bloody letter called Hirsi Ali an "infidel fundamentalist" who "terrorizes Islam" and "marches with the soldiers of evil." With her "hostilities," she "unleashed a boomerang and it's just a matter of time before this boomerang will seal your destiny." In capital letters it said: "AYAAN HIRSI ALI, YOU WILL SMASH YOURSELF ON ISLAM!" The letter ended with a kind of chant: "I know for sure that you, O America, are going to meet with disaster. I know for sure that you, O Europe, are going to meet with disaster. I know for sure that you, O Holland, are going to meet with disaster."

Astonishingly, the Dutch Prime Minister feels that Ms. Hirsi Ali is in no danger, that she is perfectly safe. It is beyond belief. As is the response of the US gov't. I can only imagine if she were a diplomat, or businessman, she would be provided all the security she needed to protect herself from the fundimentalists within the 1.6 billion members of the Religion of Peace.

 Fun weekend so far

Once again, big ups to the old school as #6 USF got by Florida Atlantic 35-23. It is so fun to actually be able to talk about USF football! Anyway, a good game against another interstate upstart team. But seeing as how USC lost to Stanford after they were like what, 40 point favorites, I think we can cut them some slack. Plus the Bulls got a little more mainstream love from Bob Ryan on the Sports Reporters this morning. cool!

Boy my Lightning are off to a good start so far. I know it's only two games in, but they've only started 2-0 twice before in 15 years! Vinny Prospal and Brad Richards seem intent on blowing away the ghosts of last year's disappointments which could make the team very dangerous with two solid scoring lines. What to watch for -- at some point every season, the guys get away from what Torts is teaching and they struggle. When they get back on his page, he is the coach after all, the team wins consistantly. Maybe we can skip that mess this year. I'd love to see the team in the Stanley Cup again. One of the coolest things I've ever been to is a Stanley Cup final game. Hockey is the greatest in-person spectator sport in the world, if the league would quit mucking things up with crappy TV deals and bad scheduling, the sport will rise again.

With any luck today, it will be a two-fer -- Boston will finish off the Angels and the Jankees will go down to a crushing sweep. Big Schill's on the mound today and he lives for these moments. He's quietly allowed Beckett to assume the ace role for the team. But to be the guy who closes out the series, that's still a big ego moment, and Schill relishes that. I think for the Jankees, this is the day that Rodger Clemmens finds out that maybe it's time to retire from his fabulous career. He hasn't been his usual dominating self and the injuries are slowing him down. I don't doubt he'll fight like the warrior he is, but his time may finally be past.

I see my girl Morgan Pressel is like 14 shots back at the Longs Drugs Challenge. Sounds slightly illicit, doesn't it? Anyway, once again, she started out badly and then improved each day. I'm wondering if she needs a better caddy? Though I haven't played golf in 20 years, I know that the first time on the course you're shooting blind and that's where the caddy is supposed to help. Seems like once she knows the course, her scores come down. Better info on the first day and she might be in better shape for Sunday. just a thought

Update:
I see where big George has put Joe Torre on notice for today's game and the rest of the series. For like what, the 100th time? At some point, threatening to fire a popular manager isn't going to get it done. The Janks have struggled with crappy pitching all year, that's not Joe's fault -- it's the GM, Brian Cashman who's not spending Steinbrenner's millions properly. Them losing and Joe getting out of there might just be a good thing for Torre.
