Here's my thing
Sunday October 7, 2007
Once again, big ups to the old school as #6 USF got by Florida Atlantic 35-23. It is so fun to actually be able to talk about USF football! Anyway, a good game against another interstate upstart team. But seeing as how USC lost to Stanford after they were like what, 40 point favorites, I think we can cut them some slack. Plus the Bulls got a little more mainstream love from Bob Ryan on the Sports Reporters this morning. cool!

Boy my Lightning are off to a good start so far. I know it's only two games in, but they've only started 2-0 twice before in 15 years! Vinny Prospal and Brad Richards seem intent on blowing away the ghosts of last year's disappointments which could make the team very dangerous with two solid scoring lines. What to watch for -- at some point every season, the guys get away from what Torts is teaching and they struggle. When they get back on his page, he is the coach after all, the team wins consistantly. Maybe we can skip that mess this year. I'd love to see the team in the Stanley Cup again. One of the coolest things I've ever been to is a Stanley Cup final game. Hockey is the greatest in-person spectator sport in the world, if the league would quit mucking things up with crappy TV deals and bad scheduling, the sport will rise again.

With any luck today, it will be a two-fer -- Boston will finish off the Angels and the Jankees will go down to a crushing sweep. Big Schill's on the mound today and he lives for these moments. He's quietly allowed Beckett to assume the ace role for the team. But to be the guy who closes out the series, that's still a big ego moment, and Schill relishes that. I think for the Jankees, this is the day that Rodger Clemmens finds out that maybe it's time to retire from his fabulous career. He hasn't been his usual dominating self and the injuries are slowing him down. I don't doubt he'll fight like the warrior he is, but his time may finally be past.
I see my girl Morgan Pressel is like 14 shots back at the Longs Drugs Challenge. Sounds slightly illicit, doesn't it? Anyway, once again, she started out badly and then improved each day. I'm wondering if she needs a better caddy? Though I haven't played golf in 20 years, I know that the first time on the course you're shooting blind and that's where the caddy is supposed to help. Seems like once she knows the course, her scores come down. Better info on the first day and she might be in better shape for Sunday. just a thought
Update:
I see where big George has put Joe Torre on notice for today's game and the rest of the series. For like what, the 100th time? At some point, threatening to fire a popular manager isn't going to get it done. The Janks have struggled with crappy pitching all year, that's not Joe's fault -- it's the GM, Brian Cashman who's not spending Steinbrenner's millions properly. Them losing and Joe getting out of there might just be a good thing for Torre.

The Angels kept putting their heads in the lion's mouth and the lion finally stopped yawning.
After walking Big Papi yet again to pitch to Manny, the future Hall of Famer made the Angels pay with a prodigeous walk-off homer that came down somewhere on Landsdown St! The Sox are now up 2-0 with Big Schill on the mound Sunday in Anaheim.
The boys overcame another perplexing start by Dice-K, who threw about a thousand pitches to get through five innings. Maybe he is worn down, or maybe it's because the ball is bigger here, or maybe it's the pressure of playing on one of the biggest stages in sports, I don't know. But he's an enigma on the mound.
Oh yeah, and the Jankees lost again. A-Rod is 0 for October and maybe even the good Lord is tired of the Jankees as he sent a biblical plague of insects into the stadium.
Might just be a good weekend after all. | | Posted by postaldog at 5:12 AM -

I see where Ayaan Hirsi Ali has been forced to flee the US back to Denmark. Aparently, the Dutch government has refused to continue to pay for her security here in the face of credible threats against her life. What a tragedy! This woman has endured unbelievable hardship in her life only to survive and become a person of jaw-dropping grace. She is in hiding in Denmark now with what I imagine is a huge target on her back. Do not forget that the artist Theo van Gogh was murdered by Muslim extremists after he made a movie that she wrote. The note pinned to van Gogh's body by the murderers was addressed to Ayann Hirsi Ali. sad
And Marion Jones has now admitted to steroid use prior to her awesome performance in the Sydney Olympics. Her years of vehement denials and lawsuits against people like Victor Conte of BALCO, gave me a glimmer of hope that she was innocent. Sadly, there is little innocence left in the world today. The vision of her graceful powerful body performing in athletic splendor is forever tarnished. F**K! Tough to believe in anyone anymore.

Here's a little goodbye image from the guys at Cox & Forkum. Technically, it is not their last toon, but an image from the cover of one of their compilation books. But very apropos. Like I said before, I feel cheated that I only just found these guys. I like their work -- the style and humor, along with the conservative leaning. Oh well, looks like it's shaping up to be one of those days. sigh |
Update:
It is reported today that the Dutch Prime Minister has told Ayaan Hirsi Ali to leave the Netherlands. He is alleged to have told her that the Dutch gov't has no intention of providing protection for her and that she is totally safe. Think you've got it tough? An entire religion wants this woman dead. Where can she go? | | Posted by postaldog at 9:33 AM -

Josh Beckett throws a complete game shutout in a statement making first game against the Angels. The guys win 4-0 with two homers, one each from Youk and Papi. Maybe I was wrong, perhaps they were just coasting into the post season after all. It will be interesting to see how Dice-K turns it up for the next game. When he's on, he's unhitable. The local fish wrapper has the Sox in 5, I've got the broom out. We'll see who's right.

Quote of the day:
"Barry Bonds has more baggage than American Tourister." -- Bob Ryan
How 'bout them Bucs? Chucky's got the boys playing big. With everyone picking them to finish at the bottom of the division and dire warnings about his job on the line, Gruden shows he's still got the mojo. With the QB he's been lusting for and a revamped O-line, the offense looks good. And mad scientist Monte Kiffin has added new wrinkles to his famous Tampa 2 defense to get them growling again. See the look on his face when they lost the shutout in the waning seconds, priceless.
Did you see the Dolphins game? Think Dante Culpepper enjoyed that ass whooping much? He suffered one of the most classless episodes in sports when the 'fins had him escorted off the practice field by security last season before dumping him for Trent Green. I loved how after diving for that touchdown, he ran around the end zone pointing to his knee and making the OK sign. Fabulous! Five touchdowns -- three by passing and two by running! Way to break it off in them!
Let's see if I've got this right -- the coach of the US Women's soccer team benches his number one goalie after she goes 300 minutes without giving up a goal. And keeps her on the bench while the team suffers its worst loss in twenty years. Then he kicks her off the team because she bitched about being benched? Tell me there's something more to this story. This guy can't be this much of an idiot. There has got to be another shoe waiting to drop.
What happened to the Mets? That's the worst collapse I have ever seen, and I'm a Red Sox fan. We know collapses. They were up by what, 17 games? Now they are completely out of the post season? Unbelievable! Hat tip to the Phillies I suppose. But jeez . . .
So now the Dems are going to play tit for tat and put a resolution up for vote in Congress denouncing Rush Limbaugh? Over the phony soldiers mis-quote? Are they that stupid? The Republicans have to be just praying this goes on the floor so they can offer the full text of the quote in context, and then show where this nonsense came from -- Media Matters. A statement about who funds this smear organization and how the left leaning mainstream media repeats this foolishness without question will also end up in the Congressional Record. That'll look pretty good. Like I said, are they that stupid?
Sadness. Cox and Forkum are closing up shop. No more editorial cartoons. This sucks, I just found these guys. They do great stuff and no one else does conservative cartoons. bummer
