Here's my thing
Saturday September 29, 2007
Big ups to my alma mater, the USF Bulls upset W. Virginia last night in a nationally televised game. Great going for the guys as they didn't wilt under the pressure of the national spotlight and perhaps gained some respect from media types.
More props to the Red Sox for finally clinching the AL East title. Man, did they make that more dramatic than it had to be. I think they open the ALCS against the Angels, who they've played well, so I'm optimistic. At least as optimistic as any Red Sox fan can be.
Needed to be said award goes to Scott Kazmir of the Rays for blasting ownership for not spending money on the team. The AL Strikeout Leader said he's tired of being on a team thought of as a laughingstock. Even more damning was his revelation that a lack of veteran presence on the team has driven players to seak counsel from opposing team's players whenever possible! How absurd is that?! I wonder how Curt Schilling's statement earlier this year, that he would welcome finishing his career with the Rays in order to mentor the young players, might have figured into that outburst?

And this is why I'm not working on ESPN/Baseball Tonite, besides the fact that I am seriously not photogenic enough to be on TV.
So Manny did come back and play well. My new theory is that he was never hurt in the first place, they were just giving him some time off before the LCS because, you know, he's Manny. He needs to be treated a little differently from normal players. If he didn't produce it would be one thing, but hey, look how the Jankees are smoochin' Clemmons and he may be out for the season. Look for Josh Beckett to get number 21 tonite and pretty much wrap up the Cy Young against local boy Boof Bonser and the Twins.
Sadly the Rays couldn't hold off the Janks anymore, and the hated New Yorkers clinched a post-season birth with a beat down of Rays. This kid J.P. Howell came out of the minors with pretty gaudy stats, but he hasn't produced in the bigs. He's a finess pitcher and watching him throw, it just looks like batting practice. I don't know if his stuff isn't moving or what, but he needs some sort of improvement to stay in the show.
How about those crazy UF kids? Why it turns out those innocent boys with their fireworks arrested in the Carolinas near a military base may not be quite so innocent. The one boy just admitted to the FBI that he made videos showing jihadis how to turn kids toys into bombs to attack those who help Americans. I'm shocked! Frankly the first warning sign should have been that they've been living in Sami (terrorist fundraiser) Al-Arian's house in Tampa.
Well, off to mop the kitchen floor. Expect a late update if/when Beckett wins tonite.
Update:
Jeez, how pathetic am I? Manny's contract runs through next year. Perhaps I should just shut up. BTW, nice interview en Espanol on ESPN with Manny.
Update:
I'm offically out of the prognostication biz, Beckett loses -- Sox magic number remains at two. Also, though Kazmir strikes out ten to take the AL lead, the Rays lose to the Jankees 3-2. groan

As predicted yesterday, my Bucs won big and the Sox lost. And now for my lottery pics . . .
Seriously, another excellent game for the Bucs as the defense was ferocious and Jeff Garcia keeps putting smiles on our faces down here. How has this guy bounced around so much? What a fierce competitor. And he and Gruden are developing a cool rapport that resembles the one between Gruden and Rich Gannon back in Oakland. And that bodes well for the franchise. Also nice to see Chucky get down on Michael Clayton for gaffing two balls. This kid has been nothing but a disappointment after his rookie season. He needs to show that he deserves time on the field.
With the Jankees loss today, the Sox are up by two games. With series against the A's and Twins, a division title is not a given. I repeat my point that the Sox are dreaming if they think Manny's coming back. Even if they get him in uniform, he's only going to be good for an easy out. I'd hate to see the guys lead the division for and entire season only to lose it the last week.
How about that Ahmedinejad at Columbia today? Is this guy a piece of work or what? Of course there are no gays in Iran, he's butchered them all! And more scientific research into the Holocaust? Yeah, like we're so not certain it happened. Here's my thing -- this was not an exercise in free speech, this was a pathetic attempt by a virulently liberal college to showcase an anti-US, anti-Bush, anti-Iraq war president of a foreign nation. Check out the dailyKos and read the moonbats glowing reviews of Ahmedinejad's remarks. And remember, the dKos is the mainstream voice of the Democratic party.
Came across these images the other day and I wanted to say how hot and sexy Anna Faris looks these days. Now that she's gotten away from the Wayans brothers, who seemed to go out of their way to humiliate her in the Scary Movie movies, she's really blossomed into a solid comedic(sp?) actress. She's done a couple more of the Scary Movie sequels and turned up in a few other flicks with respectable perfomances. Here's hoping she has a full career.

Congrats to my Sox for limping into the playoffs. I hate to see them beat up on the Rays for this, but the prospect of having to read and listen to the endless ass-kissing of the Jankees if they had overcome the Sox to win the division would have been suicide inducing. The Rays may win tonite's game against the ailing Wakefield. And I'm not sure about supposed strategies being assigned to Tito for keeping Okijima and Manny out. I think Ok's legitimately injured, and we won't see Manny in a Sox uniform again. Oblique strains are a six week injury that has to be played back into shape. And Manny's not exactly a fitness freak. Plus he's said repeatedly that he won't seek to return to Boston after his contract has expired. Theo better be looking for a big bat to put behind Papi for next season. My solution: Gagne to the Rays for Carlos Pena. The Rays need a quality closer and Pena's played for the Sox before and will be looking for a big contract after his monster comeback year.
Thumbs down to local sports hack, Tom Jones, who once again put the Jankees at #3 in his Who's Hot power rankings, saying "they've got their swagger back." And of course at #3 of the Who's Not, yeah you guessed it, the Sox, as he claims "they've lost their swagger." Ooh, that's so clever, gosh I wish I could get paid to write that stuff. groan
Picking the Bucs over the Rams in this week's football pool. I think the revamped defense -- yes it's a good idea to sit aging Derek Brooks during a game, is showing some fire again. And Garcia might just be the magic touch the offense needed. And I liked the squabbling between Gruden and Garcia over play calling. After last week's game, when questioned by the media, Garcia said that Gruden's got "like 5000 plays" in his playbook, and Garcia was just arguing that maybe they should run something different from time to time. I think that might be just the sort of good disagreement to drive the team to new heights. Plus of course the ageless freak that is Joey Galloway.
88 for Dale Jr.? Glad to see that finally settled, though I would have pushed for 08, just as a tweak to Teresa. Who I will mention once again for the uninformed, has forgotten that DEI was created by Dale Sr. for his son Dale Jr. to run. Miss Teresa better hope that Martin Truex isn't just having one of those years or she'll find herself with a team and no drivers.
How about my USF Bulls?! Finally a ranked team and they're holding up well so far with a 37-10 win over the Tar Heels. When I went to college there they didn't even have a football program. Which I always thought was sad because they've got the perfect name for a football team, and a built in mascot and so on. Keep it goin' guys!
Oh well, off to lawn mowing, car washing, and all that stereotypical Sunday stuff.
